The Primigi 23725 is a black leather western ankle boot with a Gore-Tex membrane built in. That is what separates it from every similar-looking boot on the shelf: water stays out, foot vapour gets out. In practice it means you can walk to work through a wet morning and take them off at your desk with dry feet, which an ordinary leather boot will not do.

The cut is western, with the shaft finishing just above the ankle and a stitched decorative panel... Read more

A waterproof boot that does not look like one

The Primigi 23725 is a black leather western ankle boot with a side zip and a Gore-Tex membrane. It is built for the least glamorous problem in a winter wardrobe: getting through a wet city day in shoes you actually want to be seen in.

Most genuinely waterproof footwear announces itself. Chunky soles, technical panels, an outdoor look that sits badly with everything except walking gear. This does the opposite: the membrane is invisible, the shape is a straightforward western boot, and nobody can tell by looking that it will survive a downpour.

Primigi is an Italian maker with decades behind it, and the last shows it: wide through the toes and secure at the heel. There are cheaper options among our women's boots, but not with a membrane.

At a glance

Why you'll like it: genuinely waterproof, goes on in one movement, and reads as a leather boot rather than as outdoor kit.

Best for: wet city winters, commuting, long days on foot in the rain.

Stand-out features: the Gore-Tex membrane and the cleated sole with a 2.5 cm heel.

Choose it if you want: one boot that covers the whole wet season instead of switching between a smart pair and a waterproof pair.

Maybe not for you if: you want height, you need a tall snow boot, or your size falls outside 37-40.

Everything you need to know

Design and style

A short western boot with a straight shaft finishing just above the ankle and a decorative stitched panel tracing the classic cowboy outline down the side. Everything is black, sole included, which makes it easy to match and forgiving with kerb scuffs. No visible branding and no technical detailing, which is the whole point: the waterproofing is a property of the boot, not a feature it advertises.

The Gore-Tex membrane, explained

It is worth knowing what the extra money buys. Gore-Tex is a film with pores far smaller than a water droplet and far larger than a vapour molecule. Water on the outside cannot get in; perspiration on the inside gets out. The usual alternative is a water-repellent finish on the surface of the leather, which works for a few weeks and wears off with use. A membrane does not: it is laminated inside the boot and lasts as long as the boot does.

The breathability half matters more than people expect. A fully sealed rubber boot also keeps rain out, and by mid-afternoon your foot is damp anyway, from the inside. That is the problem the membrane actually solves.

Everyday comfort

The side zip is what makes this a boot you reach for rather than one you plan around. Nothing to lace, nothing to unpick at the door. The 2.5 cm heel lifts the foot clear of standing water and gives a little shape without committing you to a heel, and the cleated sole grips on wet stone and painted crossings, which is where people actually go over.

When to wear them

The commute, the school run, the shops, a walk that turns wet halfway through, a weekend away in bad weather. They handle rain and puddles without complaint. For deep snow or hill walking you want a taller boot with a more aggressive sole; there is more in our women's footwear section.

How to style them

Straight or slim jeans tucked into the shaft, which is where the western cut earns its keep. A midi skirt or a knitted dress with opaque tights, where the boot supplies the weight a fluid outfit lacks. Or under a wide trouser with only the sole showing, which is the quietest way to wear them. What does not work is a cropped trouser that finishes at the top of the shaft.

What we think at Calzados Vesga

Waterproof footwear has a credibility problem, and it is deserved: for years the only genuinely waterproof options looked like walking boots. This is one of the models we point people to when they say they want to stop choosing between dry feet and looking presentable. Two honest caveats. It is a low boot, so in standing water deeper than the shaft the membrane cannot help you. And the size run is short, 37 to 40, which is a decision of the maker and not something we can extend.

Before you decide

It will suit you if you walk a lot in a wet climate, you want one boot rather than two, and you would rather the waterproofing did not show.

It may not suit you if you want noticeable height, you need something for snow, or you have a very high instep and prefer a lace fastening you can open right up.

Compared with the alternatives, a leather ankle boot without a membrane costs less and is fine for a dry winter. A rubber boot keeps more water out and breathes not at all. This sits between the two, which is where most people actually live. Our latest arrivals are on the new in page.

Size guide

They come up true to size on a medium-to-wide last. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one: the lining does not stretch the way an unlined leather boot does, and a winter sock takes up more room than people allow for. As a rough guide, EU 37 is around UK 4, EU 38 around UK 5, EU 39 around UK 6 and EU 40 around UK 6½. Treat these as approximate, since conversions vary between makers.

The shaft is a fixed width with no elastic panel, so if you have a fuller calf it is worth checking the fit before ordering from abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Do the Primigi 23725 run small?
No, they are true to size. If you are between two sizes take the larger, particularly if you wear thick socks.

Are they comfortable all day?
Yes. The last is wide through the toes, the lining is breathable textile and the 2.5 cm heel does not change your gait.

Are they really waterproof?
Yes. The Gore-Tex membrane is laminated inside the boot, not sprayed on the surface. There is nothing to reapply and it lasts as long as the boot. Water deeper than the shaft is the only limit.

Can I wear them in snow?
In light snow, yes. For deep snow you want a tall boot, since water comes in over the top.

How do I clean and care for them?
Soft brush or dry cloth first, then a slightly damp cloth, and air dry away from the radiator. Never on direct heat: it damages both the membrane and the leather.

Will they fit a wide foot?
The last is already generous through the toes. If your instep is high, go half a size up.

In short

The Primigi 23725 is a black leather western ankle boot with a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, a side zip and a 2.5 cm heel. It is for anyone who walks through wet winters and would rather not choose between dry feet and a boot that looks like a boot. Sizes 37 to 40. From Calzados Vesga, a shoe shop that has been fitting feet in Burgos for over fifty years.

If you are after something different

If rain is not your problem, an unlined leather ankle boot costs less and breathes more. If you need serious weather protection, look for a tall boot with a deeper tread. And if you want height, a heeled ankle boot will do more for the leg line than a 2.5 cm heel ever will.

Why buy from Calzados Vesga

We are a family shoe shop on the main square of Burgos, in northern Spain, with more than fifty years behind the counter. We do not carry endless catalogues: we stock what we have watched age well. Burgos has a long, wet, cold winter, which means we have a fairly unsentimental view of which waterproof footwear actually works. If you write with a sizing question, the answer comes from someone who has had this boot in their hands.

Delivery, returns and secure payment

Delivery anywhere in Europe takes 4 to 6 working days. Shipping is charged by destination country and calculated at checkout; there is no free shipping outside Spain. Returns from outside Spain are at the customer's expense, so it is worth getting the size right first time — ask us and we will help. Payment is secure and advice is available before and after you buy.

Are these your boots?

Yes, if you want a discreet leather boot that is genuinely waterproof and quick to put on.

Perhaps not, if you want height, you need snow footwear, or your size is outside 37-40.

One last thing

Order your usual size, try them at home on the sock you will actually wear, and tell us if anything is off. And if you are ever passing through Burgos, the shop is on the main square.
