A classic boot that does not fear rain
A good winter boot must stand up to daily use and bad weather. The Amur GTX manages this with a tough oiled leather, double stitching in the high-stress areas, a lugged rubber sole that grips on wet, cold ground and a Gore-Tex membrane that stops liquid water getting in without giving up breathability. The mid shaft supports the ankle and the padded suede collar prevents rubbing.
The membrane is built in between the leather and the lining, so the boot keeps its classic look. It lets perspiration vapour out, though as a waterproof boot it is somewhat less cool than one without a membrane.
It is a sensible choice if you want a sturdy, timeless boot that copes with rain for work, walks and the weekend.
Design and style: Vintage
The Vintage colour is a warm, bright honey-mustard tone, with the slight variations typical of oiled leather. The brown suede collar, the metal eyelets, the visible double stitching in the same tone and the logo embossed on the heel give the air of a classic work boot. The rubber sole, in a slightly lighter honey tone with pronounced lugs, completes a warm, sturdy whole.
The silhouette is simple, with a rounded toe that leaves room for the toes, a gusseted tongue that keeps out water and dirt and a hook lace-holder that makes adjusting easier.
Materials and finish
The outer is natural oiled leather, flexible and tough, with a suede collar in brown. The Gore-Tex membrane sits between the leather and the lining. The sole is rubber with lugs and a low heel that adds stability, and the join between leather and sole is reinforced with visible stitching.
The insole is cushioned and the laces, round and matching the tone of the leather, stand up well to daily use.
How to choose a waterproof leather boot
When choosing a leather boot, look at the type of leather, the membrane, the sole and the construction. A leather of good thickness adapts to the foot with wear and lasts for years. A membrane such as Gore-Tex adds waterproofing without entirely sacrificing breathability. A lugged rubber sole gives grip on cold, wet ground, and a low heel adds stability on the daily walk. Finally, double stitching on the side and at the join with the sole is a sign of construction made to last.
The Amur GTX meets these points with a classic design, without unnecessary decoration.
Everyday comfort
The comfort of a leather boot shows in three things: that it does not squeeze, that it holds the heel well and that the sole absorbs the step. The Amur GTX has a padded collar, a low heel and a cushioned insole, so you walk naturally all day.
A practical tip: if you wear thick socks or have a high instep, try half a size up. With thin socks, your usual size will be right.
When to wear them
For everyday wear in damp autumn and winter weather, city and country walks, smart-casual work and for anyone who wants a classic leather boot with water protection.
It is not a high-mountain boot and the foot cannot be submerged above the collar. For deep snow or technical routes, a specific mountain boot is better.
How to style them
With blue jeans and a knit jumper, with chinos and a shirt, with corduroy trousers in earth tones and a wool jacket. The honey tone goes with blues, greens, burgundies and browns.
Tips for winter use
Although the Gore-Tex membrane protects from water, the leather needs care: treat it with a nourishing product from time to time and avoid streets with salt or melting snow, which dries the leather. Being a light tone, it shows dirt sooner: wipe them with a damp cloth when you get home. Alternate two pairs of shoes if you wear them daily so the lining dries completely between uses.
Size guide
The model comes in EU 41 to 45, with a standard fit: neither especially small nor especially large. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, above all if you will wear thick socks or have a high instep. Approximate UK equivalents: EU 41 is about UK 7, EU 42 about UK 8, EU 43 about UK 9, EU 44 about UK 10 and EU 45 about UK 10.5; they are indicative only and vary between makers. If in doubt, write to us and we will help.
Care and maintenance
- Clean the leather with a damp cloth and the suede with a suede brush; let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators.
- Apply a nourishing cream for light leather from time to time to keep it supple and avoid stains.
- If they get wet inside, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry slowly.
- Store them with boot shapers or stuffed with paper so the shaft does not crease.
With these basic steps, the leather and the membrane keep their performance for many winters.
Our verdict at Calzados Vesga
We think it is a solid buy for anyone who wants a classic, waterproof leather boot. Its strength is the combination of traditional looks and a membrane; its limit is that the light tone needs care and that it is not a technical mountain boot.
